EMPLOYMENT RECORD / POSITIONS HELDAPWAPW is a global design and manufacturing company in the telecommunications and computing sectors. It supplies integrated electro-mechanical and thermal solutions to OEM’s and end customers. Turnover is in excess of $500M and it employs approx 3000 people in 20 locations worldwide. APW’s Outdoor Communications Systems Division designs, manufactures and integrates state-of-the-art outdoor enclosures for telecommunications applications such as cellular phone base stations and cable/fibre networks. Reporting to the VP-Telecommunications, my role was that of Global Account Director for APW business with Siemens & NEC, in Europe, Asia & S.America. In addition I oversaw APW’s Outdoor Enclosure Systems (OCS) technology & business development activities. Originally I joined APW OCS (formerly Malcoe), reporting to the MD, primarily to take the then private company into the international arena, and subsequently to expand the company’s UK activity, principally on the mobile telephony front. Strategically I was responsible for taking the company “up-market”, both in terms of product sophistication and customer profile. Internationally, my main achievements have been the establishment and programme management of new business in Europe, the US and China, and programme management of state-of-the-art product development and supply to major multinational telecommunications companies. In the UK, I have been instrumental in capturing and initially programme managing completely new multi-million pound business for APW/Malcoe in mobile telephony base stations. I also managed Malcoe’s sales team, forecasting, pricing policy and web presence for a number of years.
Matra Marconi Space (MMS)MMS was an Anglo-French joint venture, originally between GEC (UK) and Matra-Hachette (F). It was one of Europe’s leading satellite and space systems manufacturers, employing some 4,200 staff across the UK and France. Turnover was in excess of $1 billion. I worked at the company’s UK headquarters in Portsmouth. 10/92 - 10/95 Marketing / Export Manager
Reporting to the Director of Strategy and International Affairs, I was responsible for export promotion and marketing in a number of Far Eastern countries. My main achievements were to have made the company recognised as a global player in the region and to have opened up new business opportunities for a number of MMS business units, in mobile satellite communications, turnkey uplink facilities and earth observation.
04/90 - 09/92 Business Area Manager / Koreasat Proposal Manager
This was a dual role; firstly, reporting to the Satellite Communications and Ground Systems Directors as Koreasat proposal manager, completing to contract signature the successful pursuit of a satellite contract in South Korea; secondly, reporting to the Ground Systems Director as manager of the company’s “Very Small Aperture Terminal” (VSAT) business. As Koreasat Proposal Manager, I ran a team of some 20 people across two company business units and brought in $70 million worth of business to MMS. I was directly involved in proposal, marketing and lobbying activities, in the UK, USA and Korea. As Business Area Manger I ran a team of 5 people and the key achievements were the winning of a rolling contract for the supply of satellite communication terminals to British Telecom and the establishment of an international company wide satellite based video conferencing network.
05/89 - 03/90 Business Development Manager (deputy Div. Manager)
Reporting to the Satellite Communications Divisional Manager, I was responsible for business development activities and also acted as deputy divisional manager assisting in the man management of the division’s 70 engineers. My main achievements were the establishment of a new manpower planning system and the positioning of MMS as a bidder for the Korean satellite programme, in a market totally new to the company.
09/87 - 05/89 Digital Communications Section Leader
Reporting to the Satellite Communications Advanced Systems Manager, my main achievement was to bid and subsequently act as overall deputy study manager for a two-year ten-nation study into advanced satellite communication systems as part of the European Union’s RACE programme.
04/85 - 08/87 “Data Management” Section Leader
Recruited to establish a new section within MMS, my team of 6 engineers and I worked on early studies for the international space station programme and also bid, developed and delivered a space LAN test bed to the European Space Agency.
Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA)The IBA was responsible for all commercial/independent broadcasting in the UK, both television and radio. I worked at its engineering headquarters, near Winchester, the heart of a nationally distributed organisation of some 1300 engineers and associated support staff. 01/83 - 03/85 Senior Engineer, Software
Responsible for the specification, procurement, contract management, installation and successful commissioning of a national network of bespoke software based database access terminals for the IBA’s 22 maintenance bases throughout the UK.
